  3. sq mi, including the present-day states of
  4. Louisiana, Missouri, Arkansas, Iowa,
  5. Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, and
  6. Oklahoma. The purchase, which doubled the
  7. size of the USA, marked the end of Napoleon's
  8. plans for a colonial empire, and ensured free
  9. navigation on the Mississippi for the USA.
